Description New Zealand flax is one of the country’s most distinctive native plants. It has sword-shaped leaves 1-3 metres long that grow in a fan shape. In Māori sayings and songs flax is often a metaphor for family bonds and human relationships. It is also a national emblem, and is used in logos for local and government organisations.

Hollie O'Neill (b. 1977) is a contemporary painter with a talent for capturing the power and beauty of the natural environment. Through growing up in Kerikeri, and now inspired by her home at Waihi Beach, her painting illustrates the essence of New Zealand. Her 'New Zealand Natives' collection - with its vibrant colours, skilled use of light and juxaposition of nature and design - gives classic Kiwi imagery and landscapes a unique sense of heightened reality. Combining meticulous brush work with thoughtful compositions, her work reveals distinctive colour and design. Hollies work is showcased in galleries throughout New Zealand, and held in both private and corporate collections throughout Australasia.
