Fantail
Artist Mary Taylor
Type Limited Edition
Medium Hand Coloured Etching print
Dimensions 150mm x 150mm

Description This print hand etched by Taylor is an endemic bird of New Zealand, the fantail. They have an unfortunate reputation for forecasting death but in this work the fantail acknowledges the beauty of New Zealand's wildlife and spirit.

Taylor's handmade etchings and paintings draw inspiration and subject matter from New Zealand's urban life, from its unique flora and fauna, landscape, seascape and pristine wilderness. Her etchings are a time-consumming and manual process following a traditional method of hand drawing on Zinc plates - acid etching and aqua-tinting or hand colouring. Each one is unique in its own right and will vary from others in the edition.

'My art is not intended to agitate but to soothe and calm the viewer with a sense of peace and the presence of an inner life. I offer tribute to certain art styles including the stained glass tradition, medieval panels and tapestries, illustrated manuscripts and Japanese wood-blocks.'
