HEI TIKI

Artist Wayne Turnball and Ewan Parker
Medium NZ Hokitika Greenstone

Traditionally the greenstone tiki was worn by women in an attempt to aid pregnancy. In line with this, the tiki has been credited with representing the human embryo, or Maori god Tiki who was responsible for the creation of life. Therefore gifting the tiki to women wishing to fall pregnant is, and was, a good idea. The hands placed on the loins is a direct reference to fertility.

Description The Maori word for Greenstone is 'Pounamu'. Greenstone is highly valued by New Zealanders, especially Maori which plays an important role in their culture. Its not only valuable stone, but it holds a lot of mana (power/strength), history bringing the wearer good luck.
